Supplement dropshipping in the UK: how it works

Dropshipping can reduce the need to buy and store stock, but it does not remove the retailer's responsibility for accurate listings, customer service and a financially workable offer.

The basic order flow

The customer orders from the retailer's website. The retailer receives payment and sends the confirmed order and delivery details through the supplier's agreed process. The retailer pays the supplier's product and delivery charges, and the supplier dispatches the parcel.

The customer relationship remains with the retailer. Questions, cancellations, refunds and delivery problems therefore need a clear process even when another business physically sends the parcel.

  • Customer places and pays for the order
  • Retailer checks payment and order details
  • Supplier receives and accepts the fulfilment request
  • Supplier dispatches using the agreed service
  • Retailer shares tracking and handles customer support

What dropshipping costs

A service advertised as free may mean there is no separate membership or dropshipping fee. Products, delivery, VAT where applicable, payment processing, ecommerce costs, refunds and marketing still affect each order.

Calculate margin using the actual delivered cost. A low-priced single item can become unprofitable after postage and fees, while a carefully designed bundle or delivery threshold may produce a healthier order value.

What to confirm with the supplier

Before listing a product, confirm its current specification, trade price, normal availability, delivery regions, dispatch expectations, returns process and packaging presentation. Do not promise same-day dispatch or permanent availability unless that service is expressly guaranteed.

  • How are orders submitted and acknowledged?
  • When is tracking supplied?
  • Can invoices or supplier branding appear in the parcel?
  • Who handles damaged, delayed or returned goods?
  • How are product changes communicated?
  • Are international destinations supported?

How to launch responsibly

Use the exact product details and warnings provided, set realistic delivery language and run a complete test order to your own address. Check the confirmation emails, payment record, parcel, tracking and customer dashboard.

Begin with a limited range of products whose availability and content can be maintained accurately. Dropshipping is an operating model, not a guarantee of sales or profit; customer trust and useful marketing still determine whether the store grows.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Is supplement dropshipping free?

There may be no separate account or dropshipping service fee, depending on the provider. Product prices, postage, payment fees, tax and the retailer's own website and marketing costs still apply.

Who supports the customer?

The retailer normally owns the customer relationship and should handle order questions, cancellations and refunds, coordinating with the supplier when fulfilment information is needed.

Can dropshipped products use my brand?

Standard dropshipping and own-label branding are separate services. Branded labels or packaging require an agreed scope, suitable products, artwork approval and often minimum quantities.
